Our Beginning
From one college to a metropolitan university.
Founded in 1921 as Bellamy College of Nursing by Dr. Elias Bellamy, a North Texas physician and veteran of World War I medical service, North Texas Metropolitan University began with a focused mission: preparing highly trained nurses to serve the rapidly growing communities of the region.
Over the following decades, Bellamy College expanded beyond nursing into the sciences, liberal arts, and professional education. Its early emphasis on medicine and clinical education laid the foundation for what would become one of the university's enduring academic strengths: health sciences and pre-medical education.
Generations of graduates have gone on to medical schools throughout Texas and across the country, including a longstanding tradition of successful admission to Baylor College of Medicine.

Our History
A century of evolution.
As North Texas grew from a collection of established communities into a sprawling metropolitan region, so did the university.
Bellamy College evolved into Bellamy University, expanding its academic mission while retaining the medical and professional traditions established during its earliest years.
The institution eventually adopted the name North Texas Metropolitan University in the late 20th century, reflecting its place within an increasingly interconnected Dallas–Fort Worth metropolitan area.
The name changed. The mission grew. The institution's commitment to preparing students for demanding professions and meaningful lives remained.
